Teenagers are a high-risk group when it comes to driving. While driver education programs teach them the rules, young, new drivers are likely to forget something. Those mistakes can sometimes be deadly ones.
"The 16 and 17 year olds are anywhere from three to four times more likely to be involved in a fatality crash,” said Scott Poston, Purdue University.
Blame some of that on distractions such as cell phones and some on the teenage sense of invulnerability. Poston says there's no catch-all solution to the hazards of teenaged drivers.
"Experience tends to be a great teacher. Unfortunately, mistakes are part of experience. We're just trying to keep those mistakes as narrow and limited as possible,” said Poston.
Members of the Indiana Driver Education Association (INDEA) are trying to limit those mistakes. The association represents Indiana's driving instructors from storefront schools such as "Drive Zone" in Greenwood to instructors from some public schools. All have an interest in reducing crashes.
